Decatur City Schools is hosting a "Dual Credit Experience" on Thursday night, July 22nd. Parents, this is an excellent opportunity for you and your student to learn more about dual credit.
"Dual enrollment allows our students not only to earn high school credits but simultaneously earn college credits as well," said Anita Clarke, Supervisor of Secondary Curriculum at Decatur City Schools. "This gives our students a jumpstart as they enter college. Many of our students complete their basic courses, and they are heavily gained when they go to college."
Parents and students can join a breakout question and answer session with college representatives from five schools.
"The students can earn college credits at Calhoun Community College, the University of Alabama, Auburn University, the University of North Alabama, the University of Alabama in Birmingham. There are five universities or colleges our students can take advantage of being more prepared for college, and we're excited about that. Our teachers do an incredible job of educating our students and preparing them for college," said Clarke.
The session also includes information on costs involved with dual credit and the benefits of taking dual credit courses.
"This is a great gauge for how well they are going to perform when they get to whichever university they choose. The students can experience the discipline of college to complete assignments based on a syllabus given to them by their professors. They can become acquainted with the platform that many colleges use when students transition there, whether Blackboard, Canvas, or whatever it is. Our students become more familiar with the in's and out's of college, and they have a leg up on students that haven't had this experience," said Clarke.
Thursday night's session will also include information on dual credit offered virtually and on the high school campus for student convenience. The event starts at 5 p.m. at the Decatur High School Auditorium at 910 Somerville Road, SE.
