Nice to Meet You, David McCollum!

Mr. McCollum is our new Decatur City Schools Principal at Banks-Caddell Elementary School. You may already know some impressive facts from his resume, but I bet you didn’t know he has a REALLY embarrassing story from his high school Algebra II class! I asked Mr. McCollum some random questions just for fun, and the answers might just make you smile.

Resume highlights:

  • Principal within Marshall County Schools for the last 4 years
  • Assistant Principal within Marshall County Schools for 1 year
  • Teacher and coach for 7 years

What is your favorite book of all time?

The Bible is my all-time favorite; I love it. But I also like Oh the Places You’ll Go, and Everything I Needed to Know I Learned in Kindergarten.

What is your most embarrassing school memory?

One day in my Algebra II class, I wasn’t paying attention and I fell asleep. While I slept, some friends of mine decided to tie my shoelaces around my desk. So when I woke up, I couldn’t make it to my next class. On top of that, they also took it upon themselves to paint my nails pink. Obviously my teacher let them so I could learn a life lesson. And I learned it, alright!

Favorite M&M color:

Red, because Roll Tide.

If you could be any animal in the world, what animal would you be?

I would be a chameleon because I think you have to be flexible and be able to change to meet the needs of wherever you’re at.

If you could redo one grade in school, which one would you choose?

I would redo 3rd grade, because it was the only time I got a paddling at school. I’d like to go back and change it so I didn’t get paddled.

Personal message from Mr. McCollum:

“It’s going to be a great year. I’m excited because we have some awesome teachers and some awesome kids. My motto for this year is for us to do the best we can every day.”
