Graduation Scheduled for May 21 and May 22

Seniors and Parents/Guardians,

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been our hope to provide our Seniors with a graduation.  We are very grateful that due to relaxed restrictions our hope has become a reality.  In planning our ceremonies, it was our desire to limit the exposure of our staff by having both ceremonies on one day.  Due to the logistics of moving equipment and the midday temperature on our football fields, we felt a morning and evening graduation would be best.  The one-day graduation also allows for multiple weather contingencies, because a transition to indoors is not an option.  It has now been communicated by several that a morning graduation is a perceived slight and less meaningful to our seniors.  Even though no slight was intended, I gave my word at the onset of this pandemic that we would find a way to provide the very best graduation possible.  If our students feel a night time graduation is more meaningful, then we are happy to make that happen.  Austin High will graduate on Thursday, May 21st at 7:00 p.m. and Decatur High will graduate on Friday, May 22nd at 7:00 p.m.  Please understand that all other safety measures and requests, including the limit on tickets, are unchangeable per safety guidelines.  DCS is thankful to honor our graduates.

Seniors and Parents/Guardians,

Decatur City Schools is excited to announce that commencement will be held on Thursday, May 21, 2020. The ceremonies will occur as follows:

  • Decatur High School at 9:00 am at Ogle Stadium

  • Austin High School at 7:00 pm at Austin High’s Stadium

Each graduate will be awarded 1 ticket that allows up to 4 individuals to attend. Live-streaming will be available for those who are unable to attend.

While we are excited to be able to provide this opportunity for the Class of 2020, we are also taking precautions to not only make this an enjoyable occasion but a safe one as well.

Some of the precautions include:

  • All 4 individuals must be together at the time of entry

  • Temperature screenings will be conducted for students, faculty, and guests

  • All guests must wear face coverings until they are seated

Approved seating will be marked throughout the stadium and in designated areas on the field in an effort to maintain the required 6ft. distance between families. Those who have symptoms of COVID-19 or have been in contact with someone who tested positive for the virus should not attend.

In the event of rain, the ceremonies will be held on Friday, May 22nd with a second rain delay date of Saturday, May 23rd.

We realize that our graduates and their families have endured a difficult spring semester that no other graduating class has ever encountered. Although there is not an ideal commencement for everyone’s situation, this format does allow us to at least accommodate the seniors being together as a class one last time.

You will be receiving more detailed information from your school regarding graduation practice and the specifics of each ceremony in the coming days.

All of us at Decatur City Schools are very excited to be able to honor the Class of 2020. Congratulations!
