About Ms. Miller

Linda Miller

Art Educator & Artist

I have always been interested in art and working with people. At, Decatur High, my alma mater I spent many hours in art class as well as in the gym or ball fields. Art and athletics were passions of mine; playing volleyball, basketball, and softball kept me busy all through the year.
In 1984, my senior year, I was bitten by the theatre bug. DHS created a Forensics team; a speech, debate and drama team, and I was one of the charter members. After dinner speaking, plays, monologues, and oral interpretations helped me develop my flair for the dramatic, as some would say. Speaking and manipulating words into mental images drew me out into the arena of performing arts.
After graduation in 1985 I went to the University of Montevallo. In 1989 I earned my Bachelors with a major in Art and a minor in Theatre. I then moved directly into UM's Fifth Year Program to earn my Masters in Education with a concentration in Art. I believe those years spent at UM were the most fun, awakening years I've ever experienced. (PV)
My first teaching experience was at C.F. Vigor High School in Mobile County. I was a replacement art teacher for the spring semester of 1992. I then moved back to Decatur and began teaching art at Blossomwood and West Mastin Lake Elementary Schools in Huntsville for four years. By 1996 the art position at Gordon-Bibb and Benjamin Davis Magnet Elementary was open and I jumped at the opportunity to teach closer to home.
As of December 2006, I became a National Board Certified Teacher in Early Childhood Art. This was a very challenging and inspirational endeavor that helped me grow not only as a teacher but as an artist. I know that my students have benefited greatly from this rejuvenation and expansion of my teaching repertoire. Now that we are in newly renovated buildings at Ben. Davis and Leon Sheffield Magnet Elementary Schools I can teach with more light, more room, and more enthusiasm.
