October 2010: Consistency and Dependability

Our October student of the month category is Consistency and Dependability.  Nominated by the eighth grade teachers, our winner is a wonderful student who is transitioning into a great leader here at Brookhaven!! He is very consistent and dependable in and out of the classroom. He takes directions without hesitation and is always willing to help his peers or teachers!  He possesses an attitude of responsibility for his decisions and actions.  He has a great sense of humor.  He is a bright young man, and pleasant to be around.  He has a sense of honor and displays this by doing what is right and truthful.  Therefore, Jacob Matthews is a natural choice for Student of the Month for Consistency and Dependability! We congratulate Jacob Matthews for being selected as our October student of the month.

Our student selected as first runner up for Consistency and Dependability category is in the seventh grade.  Nominated by her seventh grade teachers, she is the epitome of consistency and dependability.  Each morning, she comes in prepared to learn.  Mrs. McLaughlin, her homeroom teacher, says “After an excused absence, I can count on her to be responsible and get the work she missed, which she promptly takes care of.”  She knows the procedures and she executes them flawlessly.  Her warm smile shows her confidence in her choices, which truly set an example for everyone around her.  For these reasons, we believe that Keivi Gonzalez is the best choice for Student of the Month for Consistency and Dependability.  Congratulations to our first runner up for October student of the month, Keivi Gonzalez.

Our second runner up for October student of the month is in the sixth grade.  Nominated by Mrs. Ashbaugh, this young man is a very hardworking and conscientious student. He is a real leader in my class. He is always willing to help me, or any student who needs his help. He never leaves an assignment until it is completed. He is very serious about his school work and accepts only the best of himself.  Congratulations for a job well done as our sixth grade student of the month representative, Vladamir Rivera.

Winner: Jacob Matthews    1st Runner-up: Keivi Gonzalez 2nd Runner-up: Vladimir Rivera

November 2010: Community Service and Volunteerism

This young man is a sixth grade student at BMS who not only believes in helping out students at his school, but also people in his community.  He joined the Youth Council at Morgan County Volunteer Center earlier this school year, and has encouraged several of his class mates to join him on a mission to help out in Decatur.  This young man was recently video taped for a spot on the news to promote the Can-a-thon, in which cans will be taken up to give to the NCC to help prepare Thanksgiving meals.  In addition to serving his community through the Morgan County Volunteer Center Youth Council, he is also always eager to help out his classmates and teachers as the need arises.  Alexis is a wonderful role model for his peers at BMS and teaches us the lesson of reaching out to help others in school and also in the community.

This young lady is a very kind and giving.  When a student says that they are missing a school supply, she has offered to give me her extra supplies, which she keeps in her locker.  When she offers her extra school supplies, she never discusses what the student should give her or do for her in exchange.  She gives selflessly, and instead focuses on how she can help out someone else.  In addition, when she filled out her Community and Service document, she shared many examples of how she serves others.  For instance, she spends time helping her mother clean up, which they view as an excellent opportunity to enjoy mother-daughter time.  She also babysits for her aunt, volunteers at church, and plays Bingo with elderly people in the community.  Additionally, she shared with us that even spent time helping her older brother get a job.  She helped him list his options, which resulted in him getting the job that he applied for.  For all of these reasons, I, Mrs. McLaughlin nominate Faith Slager as the Student of the Month for Community and Service.

Winner:  Alexis Veracruz 1st Runner-up: Faith Slager

December 2010: Achievement in School

This student is an exemplary student. She is taking a high school geometry course while still in 8th grade and she serves on our math team, chorus, scholars bowl, and drama team. She is self motivated and determined to succeed. She is kind hearted and is always willing to help other students in their academia. She works as a peer tutor after school every Wednesday and was instrumental in the 8th grade Math Night celebration. She is also on the A honor roll.

This gentleman is the type of student that takes his academic well being very seriously.  He pays close attention in class and always participates, making sure to clarify anything that he has a question about.  He embraces the opportunity to learn and encourages other students to behave in the same way.  In addition to promptly turning in all of his required work, he takes advantage of every bonus opportunity that I offer.  After ensuring that his own work is correctly completed, he often offers to work with other students to increase their academic performance.  Frequently, he chooses to offer his help to students that are considered to be difficult to work with.  Although he maintains a nearly perfect average in Language Arts, his attitude remains down to earth.  For these reasons, I, Mrs. McLaughlin recommend Darian Scruggs for the Achievement in School Student of the Month.

Since August, I have observed this student work each day to do his best to represent the AVID motto which is Advancement Via Individual Determination. I think he has and will continue to meet his personal achievement goals; and by doing so, he will represent his fellow AVID students and teachers with pride and dedication.
